The Hall & Wilcox partnership was established in 1917 by Alfred Hall and Francis Wilcox and was known as AG Hall & Wilcox. The firm established itself in the Melbourne legal market with strong litigation and insurance practices. By the 1960s, when the firm became Hall & Wilcox, it had one of the leading insurance practices in Melbourne and acted for a number of the national insurance companies.

The firm continued to grow over the next few decades, building up its strengths in the WorkCover and Taxation areas, and became a full-service commercial firm in the 1990s. At this stage, the management team at Hall & Wilcox made a strategic decision to remain independent and Melbourne-based, unlike many other law firms at the time.

Today, the firm continues to provide high quality legal advice to its clients across all practice areas. The firm has also seen substantial growth over the last few years, from 11 partners in 2001 to 30 partners and over 200 employees in 2010.
